About John Boehnert

Mr. Boehnert has been involved in virtually every major development project in Rhode Island since 1980 as well as in most major real estate issues. This involvement has included:

  • representation of an international lender financing the Providence Place Mall and representation of the Rouse Company in its subsequent acquisition of the Mall;

  • representation of the Capital Center Commission in establishment and implementation of Providence's premier downtown development district;

  • development of the first major air rights project in Rhode Island, a garage and hotel in downtown Providence;

  • representation of a group of major Rhode Island institutions in a successful court challenge to the State's attempt to claim title to hundreds of millions of dollars of filled tidal land throughout the State of Rhode island;

As a founding partner of Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP, one of Rhode Island's leading law firms, Mr. Boehnert has focused his practice on real estate, land use and environmental law. His clients have included major multinational companies such as Pfizer Inc. and British Petroleum, national developers such as The Rouse Company, Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, Inc., energy companies such as Narragansett Electric Company, Providence Gas Company, and Weaver's Cove Energy, governmental entities, such as the Providence Redevelopment Agency, the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, and the Capital Center Commission, established Rhode Island institutions, such as The Hope Club and the Rhode Island School of Design, and civic organizations such as the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce.

In order to allow Mr. Boehnert to pursue his interest in providing real estate investment and development consulting services through Terra Firma Ltd., while ensuring his availability to continue providing legal services to firm clients, Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP created the position of Senior Counsel for Mr. Boehnert, where he continues to practice law.

Mr. Boehnert is active in civic and business organizations, including as a Trustee of the Providence Foundation, a member of the Board, and Executive Committee, of the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, former Trustee of the Rhode Island Bar Foundation, and former Co-Chair of the International Conference of Shopping Centers Government Affairs Task Force on Property Rights. He has also served on numerous governmental advisory and stakeholder groups, such as the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management's Task Force on Wetlands and its Task Force on Air Regulations.

Mr. Boehnert writes and speaks frequently on real estate and environmental issues, has published over 100 articles, and has addressed national conferences on International Submerged Lands, International Coastal Zone Management, and Land Use Law, as well as other professional groups. He authored a chapter in a book on legal issues affecting the shopping center industry, and his article on the Public Trust Doctrine was published in the William and Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review. For years he authored a column in the Providence Business New on environmental issues, and he is an occasional contributor to the Providence Journal.

Mr. Boehnert served as an aide in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives for six years. He graduated from Boston University, Summa Cum Laude, and from Georgetown University's Law Center, Cum Laude. He is certified as a mediator and as an arbitrator.
